Ribbon Cutting Marks the Completion of the Historic Robert S. Train Memorial Recreation Center

Robert S. Train Recreation Center

MACON, Ga. - Along with Macon-Bibb County and the Historic Macon Foundation, Piedmont Construction Group celebrated the completion of the historic Robert S. Train Memorial Recreation Center renovation with a ribbon-cutting celebration on March 16, 2022.

Built by the Bibb Manufacturing Company in 1920 and last occupied in 2003, the building and any former modifications had deteriorated due to the lack of use, vandalism, and deferred maintenance. In 2016, the Historic Macon Foundation added it to their Fading Five list - a Historic Macon initiative that raises awareness of significant places that are threatened by neglect or possible demolition with the goal to restore the structure.

In collaboration with the Dunwody/Beeland Architects, the 12,063- square foot design/build renovation was in accordance with the Historic Macon Foundation and Georgia State Historic Preservation Office and completed in two phases. The first phase included demolition and abatement, termite treatment, structural repairs, roofing, stucco restoration, elevator shaft, exterior trim restoration, window restoration, and exterior paint. The second phase included framing to incorporate a new layout, complete new MEP systems, modern interior finishes, and a commercial teaching kitchen.

The Robert S. Train Recreation Center, owned by Macon-Bibb County, could only be restored and used by a government or nonprofit entity to meet a deed stipulation that the Bibb Manufacturing Co. placed on the property in 1966. The renovation created a facility to house offices and public space for the Macon-Bibb County UGA Cooperative Extension Agency to provide education in agriculture and the environment to communities, youth, and families.
